Geography
The free NOAA data including World Coastlines, World Rivers, Country and State boundaries is on a DVD. The data is divided in 5 detail levels, each of which consists of 1 to thousands of overlapping files.
When
The World Button on the ToolBar is down a file is automatically
loaded according to the screen center position and the Current
Scale (Screen Width).
If the [US80k] button is also down, there is one more level of detail for US coasts, Waterways and major lakes.
Hundreds of thousands of color points, also divided into overlapping files, have been created to enable colors when the Color Button is down.
In GpsView objects that can be added to the World Map are called Icons. 16 different types of Icons can be loaded or entered manually, then saved and reloaded.
For example one can add Country names, Town names, or more details to the basic Map.
The 16 Icons include: |

Line, Wide Line, Dash Line, Rock, Circle, Arc, Box, Point, Text |

Buoy, Lighthouse, Obstruction, Wreck (for boat navigation) |

Flag, Geophone, Recorder (for Seismic work) |
Each Icon can have one of 16 colors |
Hurricane Tracking
One can enter manually successive Hurricane positions then compute distances, Zoom In and Out.
Distances are Arc of Great Circle distances(shortest distance over the globe between 2 points).
For example the Hurricane Strength Area can be drawn as a Red circle of the proper radius, and Tropical Storm strength area with a yellow circle of the proper radius.
Personal Mapping
One can use a Garmin GPS Receiver to store points at selected intervals as he is moving, and then download the data as a Line Icon.
Also it is possible to acquire the data directly into GpsView with a notebook computer, then save the data as a SEG P1 file and reload points as a selected Icon.
The Icons can also be entered manually when the [IconEdit] button is down.
Finally a scanned BMP Map can be loaded then "tagged". The tagging process consists of letting the program know the Latitude and Longitude of 2 points as spread as possible vertically and horizontally. |
After Tagging the program switches into a Linear Mode(flat earth) and it is possible to overlay the BMP file with lines that will stay when the BMP is turned off. |
Only one BMP can be loaded at a time and the Bmp mode is more limited(Planisphere), but the BMP can be zoomed in and out to some extend. |
Details
GpsView is initially a "Sinusoidal projection" of an empty world defined by Geographic Coordinates:

Latitude -89.999999 to +89.999999 degrees ( - for South Hemisphere, + for North)

Longitude - 180 degrees to +180 degrees ( - for West, + for East) |
Background data (Icons) can be loaded as vector data(successive points defining line segments).
A BMP file can also be loaded (Raster data or bit map) for local or temporary work.
The program allows to Zoom In and Out and to move anywhere on the world.
When the GpsView Maps are available(on a DVD), and enabled, the world shows.
The program was written for Seismic work, with people loading their own data, but it now allows
other users, particularly with GPS receivers, to do a lot more.
